The little fact about Kotetsu's daughter makes Barnaby smile, although it's uncertain and tentative. It's an honest smile, not put on for the sake of appearances, but because he's happy to see that Kotetsu, even if he won't be coaxed out of the bed and into productivity (the tower from which Barnaby would prefer to keep himself aloft from panic in,) he can still be brought to talk to Barnaby about something else.

A sporty ponytail suits her personality just fine," Barnaby says, turning further in his seat and dragging one knee up onto the bed, where he grips it in both palms, giving his fingers something to do that isn't fold into the sheets. "Are you hungry? You seem like the type that would fight off a hangover with a greasy egg sandwich, or something like that. Isn't that what people your age do?"
